Care instructions
Care instructions for high-end, custom-made ball gowns require extra attention to preserve delicate stitching, intricate boning, and glued or hand-sewn rhinestone embellishments.
Washing & Cleaning
- Spot Clean First: Small stains should be spot-cleaned immediately with a soft cloth, cold water, and a drop of gentle detergent (like Woolite). Avoid scrubbing directly over rhinestone settings, as friction can loosen prongs or dissolve fabric glue.
- Hand Wash or Gentle Cycle: Hand washing in cold water with a gentle, silk- or delicate-safe detergent is recommended. If machine washing is absolutely necessary, use a gentle/delicate cycle with cold water, place the gown inside a protective mesh laundry bag, and turn the garment inside out.
- Dry Cleaning Caution: Professional dry cleaning is often suitable, but always inform the dry cleaner that the gown features custom rhinestone appliques and hand-sewn embellishments. Heat or harsh solvents used in standard dry cleaning processes can dissolve stone adhesives or tarnish metallic backings.
De-Wrinkling & Pressing
- Steam Cleaning Preferred: Steaming is the safest and most effective method for removing wrinkles from delicate gown fabrics (like tulle, satin, or organza) and around appliques. Hold the steamer nozzle a few inches away from the garment to avoid water spots.
- Avoid Hot Irons: Do not use a hot iron directly on the gown. Direct heat can scorch delicate fabrics, melt nylon threading, or liquefy adhesives holding the rhinestones in place. If pressing is unavoidable, use the lowest heat setting with a thick pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric, completely avoiding the appliques.
Storage & Drying
- Air Dry Flat or Dripping: Never put a custom ball gown in a clothes dryer. Air-dry flat on a clean towel or hang to drip dry away from direct sunlight and high heat.
- Hanger Storage: Store the gown on a heavy-duty, padded hanger to maintain the structure of the shoulders and bustline. For heavily beaded or heavy gowns, use built-in interior hanging straps so the weight of the skirt doesn't pull on the delicate neck or shoulder seams.
- Protection: Cover with a breathable, acid-free fabric garment bag (avoid non-breathable plastic, which traps moisture and turns fabrics yellow over time).
